Aizawl, Jun 17 : With the existing Indian judiciary system, there was an urgent need for an alternative dispute redressal mechanism to ensure speedy trials, according to Supreme Court Judge Altamas Kabir.
The Supreme Court Judge, who was on a short visit to Mizoram, said the legal system in India was not ‘satisfactory’, leaving a large number of cases pending.
‘Therefore, alternative dispute redressal is the need of the hour for speedy settlement of disputes,’ Justice Kabir said at a legal awareness and inter-departmental conference at Chaltlang.
He called for the support of public and NGOs towards establishment of such redressal.
Justice Kabir, who is also the Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), underlined the need to set up as many Lok Adalats, mediation centres and legal aid clinics as possible for speedy delivery of justice to the people.
He also pointed out that most of the court cases could be settled in the Lok Adalats.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla was also present at the legal awareness and inter-departmental conference, organised by National Legal Services Authority and Mizoram State Legal Services Authority at Tourist Lodge, Chaltlang.
In his address to the conference, Mr Thanhawla informed that a mediation centre had been set up in Aizawl, family courts in four district headquarters and district legal services authorities in all the districts of Mizoram.
The chief minister said a strong and cooperative judiciary was needed to contain the growing menaces of corruption, drug abuse, drug trafficking, child trafficking and infiltrations in Mizoram through Bangladesh and Myanmar borders.
